From 30 million to 40 million, Spotify subscriber growth outpaces Apple Music

According to Spotify CEO Daniel Ek, the streaming music service seems to have notched another paid subscriber milestone milestone.

Just before we turned the page to spring, the Swedish company claimed 30 million paid users. Competing service Apple Music, not even a year old at that point, had 13 million subscribers.

In the intervening half-year or so, Apple Music’s user base has grown by 4 million. Spotify seems to have pulled another 10 million.

Congratulations, humility and some cynicism went out down the tweet chains. The cynicism mostly had to do with how Spotify contracts payments to artists and publishers. The two services have been butting heads over how much to pay who for streaming licenses and what artist exclusives do to the ecosystem.

Spotify has yet to turn a profit in its eight years of operation.
