iTunes update incoming to fix issue affecting Apple Music users
We’re finally seeing a resolution to whatever the problem is affecting some Apple Music subscribers who have had entire music libraries wiped off of their Macs.
The story started out last week when blogger James Pinkstone said that he had to get all of his music back through a lower-quality iCloud file or poorly-matched Apple Music equivalents was after he had subscribed to Apple Music on his Mac. The issue has persisted with other users. iMore had later tracked down a database error found in iTunes — the program that handles Apple Music as well as the iTunes Store and locally-stored music — that may or may not have contributed to the problem.
After complaining to a service representative of his problem, Pinkstone was told that the software was working as intended. The company hadn’t directly addressed the issue until today, when it released this statement:
In an extremely small number of cases users have reported that music files saved on their computer were removed without their permission. We’re taking these reports seriously as we know how important music is to our customers and our teams are focused on identifying the cause. We have not been able to reproduce this issue, however, we’re releasing an update to iTunes early next week which includes additional safeguards. If a user experiences this issue they should contact AppleCare.
While the issue hasn’t exactly been pinpointed, whatever “additional safeguards” Apple will be sending out are very much welcome after a week of justified frustration for some Apple Music users.
That said, iTunes will still need to be radically loosened up to prevent too many dominoes from being on the same table.
