Pre-order problems hit both Oculus Rift and HTC Vive
Gremlins in the system have not been friendly to the staffs at the makers of the two major VR headsets.
For Oculus and its Rift product, CEO Brandon Iribe has gone ahead and subsidized shipping costs for all pre-orders made through April 1.
First set of Rifts are going out slower than we orig estimated, so we’re giving free shipping for all pre-orders, including international.

The first Rifts were supposed to be all out the door by April 1, but many customers are still seeing shipments unannounced. A follow-up email to those customers says in part:
We’ve been working through an unexpected component shortage, and unfortunately, that issue has impacted the original shipping estimates for some early customers.
We’re working hard to get up-to-date ship windows, and you should expect to see your order status updated on oculus.com by Tuesday, April 12. Although many Rifts will be arriving on schedule and in line with original estimates, we’ll be covering shipping and handling costs for all orders placed through today.
No word on the scope of the shortage nor on if and when the issue will be resolved. But this latest wrinkle in the Rift’s history has irked some customers over to the HTC Vive. Turns out that it ain’t all roses over there as an HTC spokesperson said that the company is working on reprocessing some of this week’s pre-orders after a few of them got canceled by financial institutions.

The HTC Vive gets its shipments started next week.
