Microsoft wants a piece of HERE Maps for the same reason Amazon does

Nope, it’s necessarily about bringing back the HERE Maps app to Windows Phone. But where is it going to go from there? Well, nowhere, not unless Microsoft helps it along. Or Amazon. Or both.

Both Amazon and Microsoft have been working on cloud server agreements with HERE, formerly Nokia-run, now in the hands of a German automaker conglomerate of BMW, Audi and Mercedes. The three plan on producing vehicles with intelligent mapping sensors to relay data about driving speeds, traffic and other bits of road information. Self-driving cars will heavily rely on this data to plan routes and second-by-second adjustments.

That’s a lot of data. And both Microsoft and Amazon are out for their pieces of it. Sources close to negotiations say Amazon, in particular, may also want a share in HERE to secure the lion’s share of its cloud provisions. Microsoft “is also interested in closer ties to HERE.”

HERE is also looking for more partners in the auto industry to join its owner consortium.
