Industry analysts say flip phones out, curved screens in

Hold onto your nostalgia. It may be all we’ll ever get in place of real flip phones in the future. This warning comes as Samsung gets a major take-up in curved display orders from Chinese manufacturers — in fact, those displays can be seen on a big talker of a device, the Vivo Xplay 5. Industry sources say several manufacturers will fill out their lineups for the second half of the year with those curvy-screened phones.

Two OEMs spotlighted were Huawei and Xiaomi. The latter was known to have a penchant for iPhone-like hardware design. But with the Mi 5 towing in cues from Samsung, the money’s on the Mi Note 2 to get a curved screen. We don’t have much on Huawei’s plans to implement tapered glass panels into a fall flagship — perhaps, the Mate S‘s or Mate 8‘s successor.

Sad news, though, for an old form factor of ours, the flip phone. Sources point to its end of life coming in late 2017 or early 2018, when the factories won’t even bother making those antiquated things anymore.

Yep, even when phone makers try so hard to keep it chic, it’s rather hip to be phab.
