Leaks cascade upon the Huawei P9’s design and launch plans

Huawei’s done with the Nexus 6P, but it’s not done building in its characteristic top visor. This time around for its newest flagship, the P9, it’s a little more crowded.

Leaks have come in from Weibo on the P9, showing off a face plate with some heavily-beveled edges and a very interesting rear: it’s packed with a fingerprint sensor, two 12-megapixel cameras with dual-LED flash and a mystery module under the diodes — possibly for infared beaming or laser autofocus. USB Type-C looks to also jump in on the bottom edge.

We’re looking at the next iteration of Huawei’s house-made Kirin chipset, the 955. It’s towing 4GB of RAM and a 2,900mAh battery. The 5.2-inch full HD screen has been carried over from the P8 of yesteryear. Ditto for that 8-megapixel front-facing camera. We’re making the presumption that EMUI version 4 will be over Android Marshmallow.

We don’t know how far away from MWC the P9 will be launching, but the phone is said to be doing so. China Mobile will likely sell the 16GB version at CNY 1,999 or $307.

It’s not the mind-blowing phone that was rumored to come during CES, but we’ll see these rumors through to the end.
