Facebook Messenger now supports multiple accounts on Android, SMS integration also coming
The world’s largest social network continues to compete against itself as far as instant messaging services are concerned, with both WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger constantly improved and boosting their popularity edge over Skype, Viber or Google Hangouts.
After picking up its own digital assistant, ditching mandatory Facebook accounts, and expanding to the Apple Watch last year, FB Messenger is ready to bring back SMS functionality to Android devices, as well as let you seamlessly switch between users without ever signing out.
The latter feature must have been in testing for a while now, as it’s already available to owners of Google-powered phones and tablets in select regions around the world, whereas the former still requires beta assessment before rolling out to the masses.
It’s worth highlighting Hangouts supports the whole IM and SMS unification affair rather handsomely, and Facebook Messenger used to do both things a few years ago too, but then decided to focus on one task as the other wasn’t very popular.
We’re guessing Short Message Services are back in style therefore, whereas multi-account capabilities will clearly come in handy for folks who share their phones or tablets with a loved one. Just be careful to conceal your stalking and trolling habits, and maybe unfriend all your exes to stay on the safe side.
