Apple reportedly controlled 40 percent of the US smartphone market in 2015
Exactly one week ago, comScore released its Q4 2015 US smartphone industry report, showing how iPhones lost steam to their Samsung rivals and Androids in general compared to the previous quarter.
Still, Apple was the dominant local manufacturer by a comfortable gap between October and December, and now Parks Associates confirm the familiar status quo for the whole of last year. Namely, the research firm claims, about 40 percent of intelligent handhelds in use stateside in 2015 were iPhones, while Samsung seized a notably smaller but decent nonetheless 31 percent piece of the pie.
Interestingly enough, one of the new report’s conclusions is that “Samsung is catching up” to Apple, despite rising competition from fellow Android-based OEM and domestic arch-rival LG. The G4 apparently helped the eternal Korean number two surge to third position in America, at 10 percent share, ahead of Motorola and HTC.
Try as they may, device manufacturers and carriers can’t persuade a large portion of mobile hardware buyers to upgrade every 12 months, a third of iPhone owners still clinging to a model older than two years, and 30 percent of Galaxy users doing the same.
Meanwhile, the percentage of US broadband households with at least a smartphone in possession is higher than ever, at 86 percent, though lower than over in Spain, where it’s already crossed the 90 percent mark.
Mobile video consumption is also predictably on the rise, with 70+ percent smartphone users enjoying the occasional short clip streaming (read YouTube), and over 40 percent regularly involved in long streaming activities, i.e. Netflix.
