The company is introducing video content to its Android app in the US, UK, Germany and Sweden starting this week. The iOS app will get the update late next week.
Spotify is licensing short-viewing content from content creators including the BBC, ABC, Turner Broadcasting, Comedy Central, Vice, ESPN and Maker Studios — the producers of Epic Rap Battles. Tastemade and other companies are planning on producing original, music-oriented programming.
Testing has gone on since May of last year at a pace that has frustrated some partners. But the company said its timing was deliberate and helped it spot flaws in directing users to specific content.
Spotify does not expect to make money from this venture, at least initially. The company has yet to turn a profit in its lifespan.
The inclusion of podcasts into the company’s portfolio, while being outshined by the debut of video, comes along with the update.
