Telstra won’t take in Lumia 950, Australia forum debates why not

Microsoft picked and chose which carrier would get its new Lumia 950 and Lumia 950XL devices in the US. The company wanted to be the source of clean software updates, something Apple can be for pretty much all of its iPhones because of its clout. But were Windows 10 Mobile OTAs really the core issue for Telstra in Australia?

The carrier sent a statement to Whirlpool Forums’ user Glenn L who relayed that the Lumia 950 had failed its testing. That testing apparently resulted in the phone “failing to connect to the Telsra network half the time.” As such, Telstra will not carry the device while it waits for Microsoft to patch it.

For disclosure, Glenn L did not post the statement verbatim.

Forum users say they’ve had fine connections popping in a Telstra SIM to their 950 or 950XL devices, though there have been reported reception problems. The treachery, here, is that the carrier might be hiding its desire to control software updates.

In any case, any further carrier landings would be good news for Windows 10 Mobile at this point.
