It’s no secret Sony’s mobile business is intensely struggling, and with such controversial decisions as launching the Xperia Z5 late stateside and with no fingerprint scanner in tow, or restricting the use of that eye-popping “Premium” 4K screen, there likely is no happy ending in sight.
But could the company have gotten so desperate to succeed that the Xperia Z6 will go global a mere couple of weeks after Z5’s long overdue US expansion? We highly doubt it, though something is clearly going down on the Xperia release front next month.
Specifically, on February 22, starting at 8:30 am CET, in Hall 3 of Barcelona’s Fira Gran Via. You guessed it, Sony is making a Mobile World Congress comeback after unveiling the Xperia Z2, Z2 Tablet, and M2 at MWC 2014, and snubbing last year’s tech expo.
The Z6 is the first suspect that comes to mind when thinking of Sony’s possible MWC 2016 headliners, but a slim-bezeled mid-range Xperia C6 might also be in contention, alongside multiple different derivations of the next-gen flagship. Unless maybe we’re not looking at new smartphones at all, but rather a Z4 Tablet follow-up, SmartWatch 4, or PlayStation VR consumer edition.
Stay tuned on our website for exclusive coverage from the Barcelona ground between February 22 and 25, including this mystery Sony event, and almost certainly, the Galaxy S7 and LG G5’s formal introductions.
