HTC returning to Nexus phones? Rumor points to pair of 2016 models
Is it too early to start talking about new Nexus phones? The early-year 2016 flagships aren’t even official yet (leaving us understandably excited to see everything MWC has to offer), and we’ve got months to go of new Lumias, iPhones, and dozens upon dozens of other phones landing before we can realistically hope to see Google announce the next wave of Nexus handsets. That said, who doesn’t like to have something to look forward to, and today we’ve got a very early rumor that an old friend could be returning to head up Google’s Nexus efforts this year, producing not just one, but both of 2016’s Nexus phones.
The chatter on Chinese social media points to HTC emerging as Google’s pick to make both the small and large Nexus phones this year. HTC got the Nexus party started with the classic Nexus One (when are trackballs gonna come back?) and most recently produced Google’s latest Nexus tablet, 2014’s Nexus 9. With the Nexus lineup enjoying new-found popularity thanks to last year’s pair of powerful Nexus options, is it time to give HTC another swing at things?
Specific details on these rumored phones are super-light at the moment, but it sounds like both may be a little smaller than last year’s: instead of a 5.2-inch and 5.7-inch option, HTC’s Nexus phones may come in closer to 5.0 and 5.5 inches.
Admittedly, this report lands without a lot of support at the moment, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s without merit. And don’t forget, initial rumors about Huawei’s involvement with the Nexus 6P were trickling out as early as last February; it may not be too soon to expect some advance Nexus rumors to start taking shape – even with the presumptive launch as far away as it is.
