It seems like each year we’re coming away from CES seeing fewer and fewer new smartphones (or at least, those from the major brands we know you look forward to the most). And while we still got to check some great stuff like the Nextbit Robin at this year’s show, manufacturers like Sony kinda let us down. That’s fine, though, as Sony’s sure to bring out its latest models in the near future. We’d been thinking we might get to check out some of those at MWC next month, but now we’re wondering if the next Sony Xperia could be here even sooner than we hoped, as the company teases what sure sounds like a new-phone announcement.
In a tweet posted a little earlier today, Sony proclaims, “Tomorrow, we’re celebrating a new beauty!” That celebration should be happening in just a few hours, as the company also gives us the date and time “12.01.16 – 02:00CET” for its news. Here on the East Coast, that spells 8PM – tonight. All this news arrives alongside the pic you see up top.
So what does this all mean? Well, it’s conceivable Sony could be hinting at an all-new phone, but it doesn’t sound too likely. After all, we heard that the company’s 2016 lineup would be lighter than previous years, and it’s just a little odd to announce a phone in this immediately-post-CES timeframe.
The somewhat more likely outcome is that we could see the debut of a new color option for an existing Xperia model – like the Z5. Considering the pink, pink, pink stylings of that cupcake shot, a new pink edition sounds like a reasonable bet. In any case, we’ll know for sure in just a few hours.
