Data-only Microsoft SIM card soon to come for Windows 10 Mobile users

No, Microsoft is not going to be an MVNO of any carrier. In fact, if anything, Microsoft’s pulling a more liberated version of Apple SIM with this news — well, in the sense that the Apple SIM is only available to the iPads. But the potential for the company to stretch into the cellular industry is there, believe it or not. And it starts with the introduction of the Cellular Data app to the Windows Store.

The app will allow you to connect to an existing US carrier “using only your Microsoft account.” No fixed-term contracts, no dealing with the customer service, just a la carte data for your buying and using. Domestic plans get out first with international roaming coming “soon.”

Thing is, the Cellular Data app needs a physical Microsoft SIM card to work — not currently available from Microsoft. And we don’t have an idea of when this will be available.
