Alcatel Onetouch Pixi 3 8-inch tablet brings Windows 10 Mobile to the big(ger) screen
One of the big things that makes Microsoft’s Windows 10 ecosystem so appealing is the degree to which it stretches its reach across form factors and device sizes – a goal Microsoft’s strived for in the past but has so far stumbled in delivering. We’ve only recently had the opportunity to see the first from-the-ground-up Windows 10 Mobile handsets, but the platform’s aspirations aren’t constrained to phone-sized devices. Today at CES 2016, Alcatel Onetouch shows us what it can deliver when we apply Microsoft’s latest mobile platform to some even larger devices, as it presents the Pixi 3 (8), an eight-inch tablet running Windows 10 Mobile.
Is it a phablet or a tablet? Well, that depends on how you intend to use it, but regardless of which you choose, AOT wants to give you options. Those include support for voice calls and LTE connectivity, so if you want to make this your primary device, you’re more than welcome to do so.
With a Snapdragon 210 at its heart, the Pixi 3 (8) won’t blow you away with its performance, but Microsoft’s mobile platforms have never been too reliant on needing the fastest silicon around – and despite the meager hardware, we found the tablet usable enough, if delivering something less than the smoothest experience around.
This is a tablet that banks on balance, though, and decisions like that choice of SoC allow Alcatel Onetouch to sell the device for a price point that should come in under $200 – a good price for either a phone or a tablet, and if this model can replace both for you, so much the better. Even at that low price, there’s a good assortment of customizablitly present, including the presence of multi-colored case options.
Sales should get started in Europe and Latin America sometime this April. Finally, if Windows 10 Mobile’s just not your bag at all, the Pixi 3 (8) is also available as an Android-powered edition.
