Verizon confirms BlackBerry Priv is on its way
The BlackBerry Priv is officially on its way, with the first orders of the Android-powered smartphone headed out now. Order the phone direct from BlackBerry and you’ll receive an unlocked handset ready to be used on US carriers like AT&T or T-Mobile, but BlackBerry goes out of its way to remind shoppers that the Priv’s not going to do them much good on CDMA-based networks like Verizon and Sprint. At least, that may be the case for now, but subscribers at one of those carriers will soon have the opportunity to join in on the Priv fun for themselves, as Verizon confirms plans to sell the phone.
In addition to BlackBerry’s own Priv sales, right now AT&T’s also offering the smartphone, and has a short-term exclusive on such carrier sales. We’re not sure just when AT&T’s head-start will be over, but once that period of exclusivity ends, Verizon’s ready to jump in with its own Priv sales. Right now, all the carrier’s saying is that the phone’s “coming soon.”
We know (and as we just discussed on this week’s Pocketnow Weekly podcast), early Priv reviews haven’t been exactly glowing, and the phone may cost a little more than it feels like it’s worth, but a lot of people are going to be curious about this model, both as something new from BlackBerry and something different for Android. And with its user base as large as it is, Verizon could be a great place for BlackBerry to try and get the Priv into some new hands.
