Nintendo’s first ever mobile game is called Miitomo, and it’s not as exciting as you think
Perhaps Nintendo built up its smartphone game debut too much. Or maybe we simply had unrealistically high expectations, spawning from the Japanese giant’s reputation, and the ever-rising popularity of mobile devices. Finally, we heard whispers of a possible Nintendo tablet a long time ago, then Android console speculation more recently, and we presumed whatever Tatsumi Kimishima had in the pipeline, it was going to be big.
But Miitomo sounds very small-scale. Granted, it might be a first baby step part of a broader strategy involving four other games coming by March 2017, and also, we don’t know its full story yet. Still, Nintendo confirmed its rookie mobile app effort would be free to play, meaning it’s probably decidedly rudimentary and/or contains paid add-ons.
At the same time, it surely does not contain any iconic console characters like Mario, Princess Zelda or Donkey Kong (we know, right?), instead focusing on Mii avatars, which get to interact with each other in the virtual world. To what end? That’s unfortunately kept under wraps at the moment, bringing us to one last piece of bad news.
Miitomo, where by the by “tomo” means friend in Japanese, will not see daylight this year, as originally rumored, but only in March 2016, once the title has been properly promoted… and explained. An odd detail that we want clarified as soon as possible relates to in-game communication between Mii alter-egos, which can apparently happen without your knowledge if you’re feeling too shy to even strike an e-friendship. Decent idea, but there’s so much that could go wrong.
