Google’s new Chromecast Audio brings brains to your old speakers

Google is on a roll with all of its announcements today. One of the biggest ones was actually to its most affordable product, the Google Chromecast, which became famous a few years ago for turning any dumb TV into a smart one for just $35. Today we saw Google announce some major changes to that product, its UI, and ecosystem, but that even included a brand new variant.

Google has just announced Chromecast Audio, which as its TV counterpart, is an affordable dongle that you can connect to any legacy speaker for added smart connectivity features. It supports both 3.5mm and even RCA connectors, and then connects seamlessly to your Wi-Fi router to provide you with streaming audio. As opposed to regular Bluetooth streaming, Wi-Fi streaming doesn’t impact battery as much as Bluetooth does, and notifications on your phone also don’t disrupt your audio experience over Wi-Fi as it does through Bluetooth according to Google. Apple has provided Wi-Fi audio streaming for years on its AirPort Express, but not at the affordable price of just $35 for this accessory. Even better is that it seems you’ll be able to stream anything that’s audio related, not necessarily just music, and services like Spotify will also work seamlessly with the service as well through an added Cast button.

We should learn more about this new product when it arrives for review.
