Where’s App Slicing for iOS 9, which was supposed to reduce app download sizes?
Among the myriad features Apple announced for iOS 9 back when it first unveiled the platform at WWDC this year, the company revealed a plan to help slim-down app sizes by not bogging them down with unneeded resources: what Apple called App Slicing. Right now, an iOS app can contain resources needed to support a whole lot of different devices: different resolution graphics, code to work with various GPUs, 32-bit and 64-bit binaries – just a lot of redundancies. With App Slicing, iTunes would only send your phone or tablet the parts of an app that are used by that specific device. Now iOS 9 is finally public – so why isn’t App Slicing active?
Today Apple alerted devs that it’s looking into an iCloud backup issue tied to App Slicing that prevented users from restoring to different devices. While Apple intends to work that out and get App Slicing working for the general public as soon as it can, for now the feature is being constrained to devs doing internal testing with Apple’s TestFlight app.
Especially considering the continued availability of 16GB iPhone models, anything Apple can do to help reduce app storage requirements is going to be well appreciated by a whole lot of users – so we’re hopeful to see App Slicing ready to go prime time (for good) sooner rather than later.
