Facebook M is the company’s new Messenger-based digital assistant

Even though we’ve been using voice commands for over a decade, it’s not until Apple launched Siri that things began to take shape to what we see today. Today we’ve seen major improvements to Siri, Google Now and Cortana, but these services are still not good enough to be widely used. We heard that Facebook’s “Moneypenny” project planned to add some human touch to this problem, and today we learn about it.

Today the company has announced “Facebook M,” the company’s new Messenger-based digital assistant. The service will initially be limited to a certain amount of users in the Bay Area, but it should expand gradually over the next few months. It is different to services like Siri though, as it doesn’t seem to be able to talk back to you through the speaker. Instead this reminds us more of a chat bot that you can chat with to ask questions and get responses. These responses are managed by a hybrid scenario where a computer will try to respond as much as possible, and if not will be assisted by real people.

It’s hard to confirm if Facebook M will eventually gain more of the functionality that we see today in competitors, but we even hear that testing included calling somebody’s cable company to get a service changed, so it’s not like if Facebook M will be inferior to competitors. We’ll keep you posted as we learn more.
