Google may offer an affiliate program for Google Play sales

Google Play is already the go-to destination on Android for apps, music, movies, TV, books, and even some hardware, and its existence is practically a license for Google to print money, taking a cut of all sales made through the marketplace. As sales go up, Google only stands to make more money, and today we hear about a project that could help drive additional traffic to the Play Store, with Google supposedly working on a new affiliate system for media sales.

Reportedly, Google’s working with the Performance Horizon Group to implement an affiliate system similar to what Apple does with iTunes. That likely means third parties being able to link to Play Store content through their online publications or maybe even apps, and taking a commission from any Play Store sales those links generate.

Things might kick off with affiliate sales of movies and music, but the sources providing this intel also indicate that the program will expand to cover the full range of Play Store content – hardware included.

This early report doesn’t go into any detail on what sort of commission structure to expect, so we don’t have much of a sense for how lucrative this might prove to be for Play Store affiliates. There’s also nothing in the way of an ETA, and considering how the whole endeavor is described as being in the early stages of development, it may be some time before we see anything like an official announcement.
