Microsoft’s recent round of layoffs hasn’t left the company with a lot of good publicity. We spent most of our last episode of the Pocketnow Weekly discussing our concern for the future of Windows Phone, mainly because Microsoft is doing away with most of its mobile team. As a result, we’ve heard Terry Myerson giving hope for flagship devices coming soon, and now we have Microsoft’s CEO shedding some light.

In a recent interview with ZDNet’s Mary Jo Foley, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella did his best to explain how Microsoft plans to succeed in Mobile. According to Nadella, one of the major strategies behind making Windows 10 free on the desktop, was to boost its popularity for mobile. The biggest problem with Windows Phone was always the app gap, and in the case of Windows 8, Nadella complains that people rarely cared about the store as well. A free Windows 10, now enhanced with some better positioning of the Windows Store on the Start menu, is part of Microsoft’s plan to give developers more reasons to build apps for Windows. These apps will then be easy to port for Windows 10 Mobile as a result.

To those of you worried about Microsoft focusing on competing platforms, Nadella explains that the idea is to ensure Microsoft services are everywhere, while at the same time forming a beachhead for its own mobile platform, making it easy to switch.

Do you feel that Nadella is on the right track with this strategy? Leave us your thoughts in the comments.
