Microsoft company shake-up retires Stephen Elop and others

Microsoft has spent the last year reinventing itself since Steve Ballmer stepped down, and Satya Nadella became the company’s CEO. The changes have involved more than just a change in leadership, but also a very corporate different strategy. Change is sadly not popular with some of the people that stay, or in some cases, some people just don’t fit the new mold, and that’s what seems to have happened today.

Microsoft has just announced that Stephen Elop is leaving Microsoft, and joining him in this departure is also Mark Penn, Kirill Tatarinov and Eric Rudder. Stephen Elop is a very familiar face for us, as he was the CEO that received a decadent Nokia, and then helped transition its mobile division to Microsoft. You might remember Mark Penn for the “scroogled” marketing campaign a few years back, Tatarinov used to head up Microsoft’s business solutions group, and Ruder was responsible for the company’s advanced strategy.

In the case of Elop, Nadella stated: “Stephen and I have agreed that now is the right time for him to retire from Microsoft, I regret the loss of leadership that this represents, and look forward to seeing where his next destination will be.” As a result, Terry Myerson take on more responsibility in addition to leading the Windows team. Myerson will take over a new team called the Windows and Devices Group. He will be focused on Microsoft devices and the engineering of Windows. Scott Guthrie will continue to lead the cloud and enterprise teams, and Qi Lu will still manage the applications and services group at Microsoft.

These are not necessarily good news for the future of the hardware that will power Windows 10 Mobile later this year, but we could be in for a surprise as well. How do you feel about this change? Leave us a comment with your thoughts.
