Android gains voice unlock capabilities
Voice commands already let us do so much with our phones, from running searches, to composing text messages, to even turning on and off our home lights. But for as much as we can do, we’re really only just scratching the surface, and we’re sure to see voice-control functionality expand into new and unexpected areas in the years to come. Right now, the next to arrive is voice-based phone unlocking, as Google starts going live with Trusted Voice.
Evidence had already surfaced in Google Play Services pointing to the forthcoming arrival of Trusted Voice, a new component to Smart Lock that expands on abilities like using your phone’s camera for a face-based unlock to allow the system to authorize you based on the sound of your voice.
As you might expect, it’s not the most secure thing in the world – and Google’s being upfront about this – but it’s more secure than no lock at all, and the convenience factor here promises to be quite high.
Trusted Voice appears to be rolling out at a casual pace, so even if you’ve got all the latest Google software on your phone, you still may have to be patient for a few more days before you see it arrive for you.
