MWC 2015 and the launch of Snapdragon 810-powered phones like the HTC One M9 seemed to finally put a damper on those weeks and weeks of everything-that-could-be-is-wrong-with-the-Snapdragon-810 rumors. No matter what bumps along the road the SoC may or may not have had, it was ending up in more and more phones. And to hear a report from about a month back, there could be good reason for this 810 fiasco feeling like it was becoming played out, appearing to show no major thermal issues with the 810 in operation. Now that HTC One M9 handsets are making their way out into the hands of testers we’ve got some new Snapdragon 810 performance reports to check out, and from what one early analysis has to reveal, the issue of excessive heat could still be a very real concern.
The team over at Tweakers has been putting their One M9 through the wringer, and found it to be giving off a heck of a lot of heat. How much? Well, in at least one benchmark test the One M9’s surface temperature rose to a near-unbelievable 131.7F, or just about the perfect temperature for a medium-rare steak. As you can see in the FLIR image above, other smartphones running the same benchmark also got hot, but not nearly to the same extent as the 810-powered One M9.
As Tweakers is willing to admit, their test One M9 was running non-final software, but we’re still going to be looking at the same hardware for the commercial release. Sure, software can easily help control runaway thermal issues like this by dialing-down the load, but it’s still a little unnerving to think about a few lines of code being all that sits between a speedy new phone and one that could slowly be trying to cook your hand as you use it.
