Hints point to the Apple Watch being Jony Ive’s last project

There’s a famous saying in Latin America the goes a little like: “Always leave a party early, so that you’re missed.” That could be said about the late Steve Jobs who passed away just months after turning his bankrupt startup into the most valuable company in the world. His famous army of executives behind such an incredible success story is still there, but the question is for how long?

An extensive profile on Jony Ive was recently published by The New Yorker, and if you read into the lines a bit, there are a couple of hints that point to a future without Jony Ive. First of all, the profile includes a lot of talk on the Apple Watch, and within the article, Ive spends some time listing the people that helped him with the polish and design of the product, something never before seen from Apple. Usually it’s just Ive as the face behind the design, but it seems that Ive is now interested in giving other designers like Marc Newson some exposure. The article also calls the Apple Watch “handcuffs” for Ive, which make it sound like the only thing holding him back from retiring. Ive also spent some time claiming that 2014 was the toughest year of his career, as he struggled with pneumonia, a probable result of being burned out with challenges like the Apple Campus 2, the iPhone 6 and the Apple Watch.

At the moment nothing is set is stone, and it could just be that these hints are part of the normal drama at Cupertino, but whatever the case may be, the departure of Jony Ive could mean serious business for Apple, mainly because of how important his role is after the passing of Steve Jobs.
