Windows 10 smartphone preview is here

The day you’ve been waiting for has arrived: the Windows 10 preview release for existing Lumia smartphones is here. We’ve known to expect it for sometime in February, but after last week’s rumored start to the preview failed to happen, we were left without a great sense of an ETA. All we needed was a little patience, because today Microsoft finally flips the switch, inviting curious Windows Phone users to get an early taste of Windows 10 on their phones.

To get the preview on your phone you’ll need to register for the Windows Insider program, though that’s free and easy (hit up the first source link below). The larger restriction – at least for the moment – concerns which devices have access to the preview.

As of right now, Microsoft is only making the Windows 10 smartphone preview available for the Lumia 630, Lumia 635, Lumia 636, Lumia 638, Lumia 730, and Lumia 830. Others may be added later, but if you want to give it a spin today, you’re going to need one of those handsets.

We’re currently scrambling to install this guy for ourselves (as you can see above), and look forward to sharing with you some of our first-hand experiences with the Windows 10 Technical Preview in the days to come.

Update: In case you haven’t seen it yet, our hands-on with the Windows 10 phone preview is ready for you to enjoy.
