Apple malware can infect your iPhone, computer too

If the simple fact that you’re using an Apple product makes you sleep well at night, without worrying about malware, it’s time to change your perspective. WireLurker is a family of Apple malware discovered by the Palo Alto Networks that is capable of infecting both your iOS as well as Mac OS devices.

iOS devices can be infected through infected Mac OS X computers, or by downloading apps to your phone that have been repackaged to contain the malware bit. Its presence has been reported in China, and 467 OS X applications have been reported as infected on the third party Maiyadi App Store in China.

WireLurker monitors any iOS device connected via USB with an infected OS X computer and installs downloaded third-party applications or automatically generated malicious applications onto the device, regardless of whether it is jailbroken“, says the report. Once on your phone, it can check your address book and even read through your messages, so it’s best to stay away from applications from unknown sources (both on Mac OS and iOS); it’s also a good idea to stay away from unknown computers (USB cable connections) or chargers.
