Apple could have eye on February for Apple Watch release
Apple’s first smartwatch is coming… eventually. While the company introduced the Apple Watch earlier this month, it will be some time before the wearable is ready for public release, and Apple’s been talking about a timetable that would see sales begin in “early 2015.” But just how early is “early?” A new report published by The Information attempts to reveal the Apple Watch’s path to market, including missed targets for a 2014 release, and mentions a possible goal for the start of sales: Valentine’s Day.
Based on our understanding of the Apple Watch – especially the higher-end versions like the Watch Edition – being positioned less as a gadget and more as a functional fashion accessory, the idea of delivering it for a holiday already deeply connected with gift-giving and jewelry certainly makes more than a lick of sense. Really, it sounds more like a question of whether the smartwatch will be ready to go by then, rather than if such a release would be a wise strategy.
And especially after missing out on the year-end holiday season, it might behoove Apple to plan a release around another relatively big shopping event, something the latter portion of winter isn’t particularly brimming with. That said, this strategy may not be without risk, as we’re sure to see a lot of new smartwatches debut at CES, and mid-February sales could be hampered by shoppers waiting until MWC to see what gets announced there.
