The Desire 816 was quite successful as a midranger for HTC, racking up plenty of sales overseas and earning praise in our full review of it – we called it a “mid-tier phone with flagship DNA,” so a successor naturally has us intrigued. The HTC Desire 820 has gone official today as a 64-bit Android, and it’s looking to set “a new benchmark for mid-range smartphones.”
With an 8MP front-facing camera in tow, the Desire 820 is one sweet smartphone when it comes to (front-firing) imaging capabilities. There are camera features that make interesting use of this, like real-time Live Makeup and Photo Booth. The rear-facing camera boasts a fairly high megapixel count, with 13 at hand, but as we discovered in our testing of phones like the One mini 2, that doesn’t necessarily mean a good thing. That camera has an f/2.2 aperture and a BSI sensor.
One of the headlining features of the phone is the 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 processor. Because of this, LTE Cat 4 is supported, which means speeds up to 150mbps are supported (if you have a cell network that supports the tech and is fast enough, of course). The Desire 820 has also been tweaked in close collaboration with Qualcomm in order to maximize power efficiency, so battery life can benefit.
The Desire 820 will also be marketed to those who crave the media abilities of a phone. There’s a 5.5-inch 720p display, and front-facing BoomSound speakers are also part of the phone, so enjoying a movie or gaming on the phone shouldn’t theoretically be a problem.
Let’s talk more about how the Desire 820 looks. There’s a two-tone color unibody that improves the device’s strength and tolerance (while also letting you stand out with your color choices). The Desire 820 is also customizable through HTC’s Dot View covers (sold separately), which will let you use your phone without even opening up the case.
The Desire 820 will be available across the world beginning at the end of September, and HTC has offered up no pricing or specific availability details at this point. It’ll be available in Marble White (a glossy color), Tuxedo Grey (a matte color), Santorini White (glossy), Milky-way Grey (glossy), Tangerine White (glossy), Saffron Grey (glossy), Flamingo Grey (glossy), Blue Mist (glossy), and Monarch Orange (glossy).
