Samsung Gear Solo cellular-connected smartwatch tipped to launch next month
It’s been a little while now since we heard anything new about the rumored Gear Solo, said to be Samsung’s effort to deliver a smartwatch that features its own cellular radio (like that Timex model we just looked at), freeing its operation from the requirement of having a nearby smartphone. The evidence we were seeing back in May looked pretty solid, with the wearable clearly showing up in an import database as the Gear 2 Solo, but there hasn’t been much in the way of new developments since. Was this wearable still happening? When might it debut? The latest word out of South Korea suggests the smartwatch could share the stage with the Note 4 at Samsung’s Unpacked event scheduled during IFA 2014 in Berlin next month.
Beyond just an ETA, we also pick up some possible new details about the Gear Solo. For instance, we hear that it might be 3G-only, not taking advantage of LTE speeds. That may not be as objectionable as it sounds, though, especially considering the low-to-moderate data needs a smartwatch like this is likely to have. There’s also word that this cellular mode wouldn’t be forced upon users, and they could tether the Gear Solo to their phone just like they can with existing Gear models.
Big questions remain, including what impact on battery life and pricing the presence of a cellular radio may have, but we’ve still got a few weeks to go before IFA – plenty of time for new details to leak out.
