Samsung granted patents for a round smartwatch

Even with all the buzz surrounding Samsung’s smartwatch offerings, the bottom line hasn’t proven to be as buzz worthy for this or any other company building wearables lately. Some customers seem to still be waiting for Apple to make its move later this year, and others simply feel that a smartwatch should look like the Moto 360. If you’re on the list that believes Samsung could do better with its designs, it turns out that the company does too, and new patents reveal this.

The USPTO has just granted Samsung a couple of patents that the company had originally filed since March of 2013. Within these patents you’ll notice that Samsung filed the concept of building a round smartwatch, just like the Moto 360. It’s unclear if Samsung’s plans with this design will ever see the light of day, or if these will be exclusive to its proprietary Gear lineup instead of Android Wear.

Samsung’s Android Wear offerings could benefit from the boost of a better smartwatch design. We sadly didn’t find the Gear Live to be groundbreaking in any way, so hopefully Motorola isn’t the only company with a round smartwatch later this year.
