HTC rejects smartwatch video rumors

Yesterday we shared with you an HTC behind-the-scenes video, highlighting the company’s work with design. In theory, this should have been innocuous stuff, were it not for what some eagle-eyed viewers noticed during an otherwise not really noteworthy shot: a watch. Not a watch being worn, but one sitting rather prominently in a stand on an employee’s desk. Almost like where you might keep a smartwatch you were working on? At least, that’s the rumor that got started, but now HTC is stepping up to set the record straight, denying that this is something we’ll soon see the manufacturer release.

HTC explains that what we’re seeing in the video is not indicative of “an actual product HTC is planning to release” and describes it as the result of encouraging designers “to explore and tinker with new ideas and even models.”

None of that is to say that HTC isn’t very much working on smartwatches – past comments from company execs have suggested some level of interest, and rumors have hinted at a possible Android Wear model – but whatever it is we did see in this video is either only a tangential part of those efforts, or otherwise distantly related design work. The point HTC seems to be driving home: it didn’t just accidentally let the cat out of the bag here.
