HTC lately has been one of the market leaders in terms of Android updates for its smartphones, as it’s been routinely providing updates since the One M7 of yesteryear. The company even committed to updating the One M7 and M8 to Android L within minutes of the OS update’s unveiling, so it’s looking fairly obvious that it’s serious about getting devices up to date. One M8 models are still stuck on Android 4.4.2, though, while Android 4.4.4 is already out, so HTC Vice President of Management Mo Versi shined some light on the unlocked One M8 Android update schedule.
In a tweet, Versi said HTC’s target is “late next week” for Android 4.4.3 updates for unlocked One M8 phones.
No, you did not read that wrong, and no, it’s not a typo — Android 4.4.3 is coming to One M8 models, not 4.4.4. Versi says the security fixes part of 4.4.4 have been merged into the 4.4.3 build, which only serves to confuse us further as to why the moniker hasn’t changed to reflect the fixes.
Users of non-unlocked One M8 models will get the updates after the unlocked ones depending on carrier approval processes, but Sprint has surprisingly already issued the update for rollout.
