Samsung’s virtual reality headset gains an official name

If there’s a company that’s famous for actually launching anything that lands at its R&D department, it’s Samsung. We’ve seen the company dare the odds successfully with inventions like the phablet, even though other experiments like the Galaxy Round haven’t proven to be quite successful. We’ve heard of the company wanting to compete with some daring accessories a couple of weeks ago as well, and today things start taking shape.

Those of you who were happy with the rumors that Samsung was wanting to compete with the Oculus Rift, should be even happier today. The company has just filed for a trademark of the product’s name, and as it turns out, it’ll be called the “Gear VR”. Now don’t let the name “Gear” fool you, as rumors have it that this product won’t be running the Tizen OS as we currently see with Samsung’s wearable offerings. Reports have it that Samsung is planning to team-up with Oculus in order to use its operating system instead.

The Gear VR is rumored to be an exclusive virtual reality headset that connects to Samsung smartphones and tablets in order to provide gamers with a more immersive experience. It’s hard to predict that it’ll launch any time this year, but if it does, it could give Samsung the edge in accessory offering, so long as it can keep the price reasonable.
