Ever since Sony posted a render of an Xperia Z2 with a Verizon Wireless logo, the hype has been intense for the device. While we still don’t know if it’s coming or not, images of the phone certainly have us thinking it’s on the way. Today, we’re getting a lot more information about the device, including the model number, codename, and release timeframe.
The reason for the delay of the Verizon model compared to the regular GSM one is allegedly due to the fact that an LTE-Advanced model must make its way through testing, and then the Verizon certification process (something that is infamous for taking ages). We’re assuming that this certification could mean that Verizon’s Z2 will have VoLTE support.
The phone also now has a codename — the Sony Sirius Viv. The model number will apparently be D6503, which is quite similar to what the current GSM-supporting Z2 models are named as.
According to this report, the Z2 will be landing in the middle of the next quarter. At that point we’re expecting to be contemplating new flagships from Samsung, Motorola, and even Apple, so it’s possible that this timeframe could simply be too late for a Verizon Xperia Z2. With that said, anyone waiting to purchase one of these?
