LG G3 sales may be off to a booming start, but will that last?
One week ago, LG introduced us to its G3, the company’s latest Android flagship. Between the earlier-in-the-year launch compared to previous G-series models and the smart hardware design, the G3 sure looked like it might have what it takes to square-off against Samsung’s GS5 juggernaut. Sales have already gotten underway for the G3 in LG’s native South Korea, and while we only have some very preliminary numbers to look at, what we’re hearing sounds pretty promising for this smartphone’s future.
Reportedly, LG’s been selling the G3 at a rate of up to 30,000 handsets a day, exceeding initial interest in the Galaxy S5. So, is that it then? Can we call the G3 a win?
Well, it’s probably a little more complicated than that. Remember, sales of the GS5 in South Korea started out a little weird, with carriers defying Samsung and starting sales of the phone early. While that may not outright invalidate this comparison, it sure makes it a lot more difficult to read.
It’s also worth keeping in mind that the G3’s ultimate success (or lack thereof) won’t be dictated by first-week sales, but how it fares in the long run; we’re not expecting many new devices this summer, so sales over the next few months are going to see these spring and winter launches fight it out with each other. Those are the numbers that will help us discern a winner, but we’ll just have to wait a little longer to see them arrive.
