HTC One mini 2 hands-on: a first look in photos and video

In case you missed the announcement, the rumored HTC One mini 2 finally broke cover this morning, and it’s just what the rumors said it would be: a pint-sized version of the company’s well-received One M8 smartphone.

Aesthetically, the One mini 2 is everything you’d expect from a mini metal One M8 – but true to form, HTC has made some sacrifices on the spec side. Under the hood, we’re looking at a quad-core Snapdragon 400 (MSM8926) at 1.2GHz, leaning on a gig of RAM and 16GB of storage, with MicroSD cards up to 128GB supported. The display is a 4.5 inch LCD at 720p, the battery a 2100 mAh embedded pack, and you’ll notice the camera lacks the distinctive Duo sensor of its up-range sibling; the One mini 2 packs the single lens of a more conventional 13MP shooter instead.

Despite those down-rated specs, the family resemblance here is striking – even more so than on last year’s model. The One mini 2 bears the same brushed aluminum chassis as its bigger brother, with the same polycarbonate inlays, similar BoomSound speakers, the same palm-kissing curve on the backside, and even the same catalog of color options (Amber Gold, Glacial Silver, Gunmetal Gray). The software, too, is cut from the same cloth: HTC Sense 6 atop Android 4.4.2.

But that’s ground we’ve already covered in our news post. Rather than rehash more specs, then, we thought we’d give you a sense of what the One mini 2 looks and feels like in this wonderfully physical, tactile world of ours. We’ve cherry-picked our favorite shots from our initial photo session with the device and placed them below, alongside a quick video tour of our pre-production review hardware. (For a fun test of your ocular ability, see if you can spot the silver volume rocker clashing slightly with the phone’s aluminum finish in the video; while devices in follow-on batches will feature volume keys that better match the phone’s casing, the first production run will carry this unique quirk).

Check out the pics, take in the video, and then drop us a line down below letting us know what you’d most like us to cover when the time comes for our full review!
