Just a few days back we were talking to you about Sony’s plans for the Xperia Z2 when it came to North America, and specifically when shoppers in the US might get a shot at the hardware. The story didn’t sound too optimistic, with the phone not arriving until summer at the earliest, and without any word of carrier interest, meaning anyone with their heart set on the Z2 would probably be buying it from Sony directly. Disappointing, maybe, but not really surprising, given Sony’s focus on other markets abroad. But then today this pic up top turns up, posted by Sony itself, and appearing to reveal a Z2 with Verizon branding.
We first heard about the pic as posted to the Sony Xperia Google+ account, but that post has since been removed. Still, we’ve spotted it elsewhere, and for the time being, at least, it’s still accessible on the Sony Mobile Poland Facebook page.
Sony and Verizon aren’t exactly chummy, so could we really see the Z2 emerge on the carrier? Our first instinct was to resist the idea, but looking around a little more we found a report from back in March that seemed to suggest work on a Verizon-bound Z2 variant. Separately, we might be able to dismiss either of these finds as one-off mistakes, or maybe things we were interpreting incorrectly, but taken together – well, perhaps there is something to the idea of a Verizon Xperia Z2, after all.
Update: Sony reached out to us with an explanation for the image. It writes:
“A mock-up image was mistakenly posted to the Sony Mobile Google+ page. The image has since been removed and we apologize for any confusion this may have caused. For our U.S. customers eager to find out more information about the availability of Xperia Z2, we are excited to share that the device will be coming to the U.S. unlocked this summer.”
OK, “mistakenly posted,” that we buy. But was it also mistakenly created, we wonder? There’s nothing here that specifically denies that the Z2 is coming to Verizon.
