Samsung has done some very interesting efforts to push the smartwatch ecosystem forward. The Galaxy Gear hasn’t been the best smartwatch in the world, but Samsung did a very decent job in giving us a product that could allow you to use more of your smartphone features on your wrist, without needing to pull your phone out of your pocket. Some of these features even included allowing you to make phone calls through the device’s speaker, and it seems Samsung wants to go even further with this concept.
We have some new reports that show Samsung working on a device called the Samsung Gear Solo, as part of the new Samsung Gear line-up. The idea is that this product will be a stand-alone smartwatch that will not depend on your smartphone to operate. The device will be reportedly only available in South Korea and include a USIM module and will include built-in radios for receiving and making calls. Obviously, just like the original Galaxy Gear was, this could just be a concept that Samsung wants to test in its market and then expand to other markets.
The device is expected to be released in SK Telecom in the next couple of weeks, and there are already some concerns over how Samsung plans to handle battery life with a device this small. We’ll keep you posted as more rumors continue to evolve.
