It’s almost hard to believe that it’s been eight months since Motorola introduced us to the Moto X in August of last year. That’s probably due in no small part to how the smartphone side-stepped the spec wars fought by other Android flagships, as well as how Motorola’s been able to keep the phone fresh by introducing new Moto Maker options, not to mention increasing the availability of Moto Maker in general. Where do we go from here, though? According to a new leak that surfaced over the weekend, Motorola may be envisioning the sequel to the Moto X as the Moto X + 1.
The logo you see below is our source for this name, but what might it mean? That designation as the “X + 1” has us unsure if we should treat this as a proper sequel or more like a hardware refresh in the spirit of the HTC One X/X+. And what is it about this kind of branding that’s so appealing to manufacturers right now? We’ve got the new HTC One, not to mention the OnePlus One, and now another “plus one” phone?
Separately from that leak, though quite possibly related, @evleaks also drops a little analogy suggesting that what wood was for the Moto Maker in 2013 (albeit quite late 2013), leather may be for 2014. Does that mean that the existing Moto X would be getting a new leather option? Or might the leather back be reserved for this Moto X + 1, instead? We just don’t know for the moment, but we’ve got a good feeling we’ll be finding out sometime this summer.
