Yesterday may have been our big day for new Google software on Android, seeing the release of both the Google Now Launcher and a Google+ update, but now it’s iOS’s turn, and Google has a pretty substantial update available for the platform’s Hangouts app, bumping it ahead to version 2.0.
Tablet users are really going to like this one, as Hangouts gets optimized for your iPad’s display. That means a two-pane view for conversations, making better use of screen real estate, among other improvements. The update adds support for video messages, letting you record a short clip and send it to your friends, and offers animated “stickers” to accentuate your conversations. There’s also the new ability to share your location, letting your contacts know right where they can find you.
Beyond the new features, you’ll see some UI changes (fitting in nicely with iOS 7), and while you might not notice the improvements, Google reports that app performance has been tweaked.
Hangouts 2.0 is available now for Apple devices running iOS 6.0 or later.
