Where are BlackBerry smartphones going from here? We’ve heard that hardware keyboard should be getting some more attention, and there’s been recent talk about introducing some models this year with modern quad-core SoCs. Now one rumor attempts to look even further out, and claims that BlackBerry is planning to develop a handset around the still-unannounced Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8994.
The MSM8994, based on what’s been revealed in leaks, looks to be a beast of a chip. It would be a 64-bit component, apparently with eight processing cores, and would feature a new Adreno 430 GPU. We’re expecting Qualcomm to start shipping the chip towards the end of 2014, so it’s not surprising that this rumor claims that a BlackBerry handset running the chip wouldn’t be on-tap until sometime in summer 2015.
Right now, though, the rumors for this very high-end BlackBerry smartphone begin and end with the MSM8994. That leaves a lot up in the air, but then again, what could we really expect from a rumored model that’s still sixteen months out? Correspondingly, that means you should treat this rumor with an appropriate amount of uncertainty; even if this accurately reflects BlackBerry’s plans right now, there’s a lot that can change in the course of a year, and a sure thing today might not be tomorrow.
