How Best Buy’s unusual new offer could save you $50 on a phone this year
We’re well used to seeing smartphone retailers offer discounts on their wares, but all too often those savings come with significant restraints: maybe only certain models are covered, or only those form specific manufacturers, and we’re often talking about some narrow time window during which you can take advantage of the deal. Yesterday Best Buy revealed a new promotion that isn’t without its own limitations, but the generally wide-open structure of it, with comparatively few restriction, has us thinking it’s worth sharing with you.
Here’s how it works: if you’re currently an AT&T, Sprint, or Verizon subscriber, you register your phone number with Best Buy between February 2 and 15, and then if you upgrade to a new (on-contract) phone at Best Buy before the end of the year, you get $50 off.
The nice thing is that you’re under no obligation to follow-through on the offer; you can register next week and then later decide not to get a new phone, or to get it from someone other than Best Buy. So even if you’re perfectly happy with your current phone, it’s not like you have anything to lose by at least registering for the deal, so that $50 savings is on the table if you later change your mind about upgrading.
With a lot of high-profile phones on our radar for 2014, we can think of more than a few that we’d love picking up for $50 less on launch day.
