Apple’s launch of the iPhone 5c along with the iPhone 5s took the world by surprise, but not really a positive one. Most of us still can’t understand why Apple launched a “budget iPhone” that’s too expensive to compete with the budget market. As a result, Apple’s quarter earnings call had something to say about the iPhone 5c, and it wasn’t positive.
According to Tim Cook, “the iPhone 5c was popular among first-time iPhone buyers, but not as popular as expected”. It’s clear that you don’t need a degree in Rocket Science to prefer to buy an iPhone 5s for just an extra $100, and to stick with the lower-end iPhone 5c. That said, the competition by devices like the Moto X, Moto G, and most of the Nokia Lumia line-up makes this a hard market for Apple to compete with, if the iPhone doesn’t drop an extra $100.
Apple is rumored to launch a new batch of iPhones during WWDC this year, and lots of these rumors include designs for two devices out of which one of them is a phablet. Let’s see if Apple does a better job in the budget sector this time.
