We’re just a couple months away from Samsung’s expected Galaxy S 5 launch, and while we’ve heard plenty of stabs at what to expect from the handset, we’ve lacked a real cohesive picture of the phone. Just look at yesterday’s so-called “confirmed” specs; while they named a few key components, they skipped even more. When are we going to get a real top-to-bottom understanding of what Samsung’s doing with the GS5? Well, we’re still not quite there yet, but today we get to look at one of those overlooked areas from yesterday’s rumor, the Galaxy S 5’s battery.
When we were talking about the GS5’s battery earlier, the claims were almost too preposterous to believe: that the phone could get a 4000 mAh battery. Even the Note 3 only has a 3200 mAh component! This new theory is a lot more sensible, suggesting that the GS5 will arrive with a 2900mAh battery.
That’s up from 2100mAh in the GS3 and 2600mAh in the GS4, so the progression makes a lot of sense, especially considering the other hardware improvements we’re expecting.
Maybe most interesting, is the rumored tech behind this higher-capacity battery: silicon nanowires. You might remember us talking about the use of silicon in batteries for the ill-fated Ubuntu Edge project, and if Samsung uses the same sort of thing here, affording it enhanced energy density, it could hit that 2900mAh figure without the battery getting physically much larger, if at all.
