Most new device launches go the same way: usually the press gets review units before they’re widely available, and we get to use them for a few days -or a week if we’re lucky- as we work on our review.
Then press day arrives. The embargo on media coverage lifts, and everyone posts their reviews and videos at the same time. It’s a huge frenzy, commenters go nuts, and it’s a giant explosion of frantic opinion-sharing activity.
For about … a day. And then it all goes away. Sure, there’s followup coverage as people find bugs and hidden features, but after that initial blast, not many people revisit the device to see how it feels a few months later, because everyone’s already focused on the next big deal coming down the pipe.
So let’s do something about that. Let’s see how we feel about devices when they’re not shiny and new anymore. This is After The Buzz.
In our Nokia Lumia 1020 review, we called the “warthog” one of the best Windows Phones out there, with the best camera experience you could hope to find on a smartphone. The device’s 41MP PureView camera was so intoxicating in specs and sheer capability that two of us bought the phone on launch day, and almost half the Pocketnow team still carries it as an occasional-use device (or, in my case, as a daily driver).
The intervening six months have brought many changes in the mobile landscape: iOS and Android have each seen big interface overhauls, while Windows Phone’s look has remained much the same as the Windows Phone 7 days. Nokia’s competition has continued churning out phones featuring technology similar to the 1020’s optical image stabilization, and Nokia itself hasn’t lost any steam either – it launched the better-specced Lumia 1520 this fall to keep pace with the phablets of the world.
Given all that’s changed, is the Lumia 1020 still the king of the cameraphone mountain? Should you still consider picking one up if you’re looking for the best that mobile photography has to offer, or should you wait for the next big thing to come ’round the bend? Those questions and more will be answered in the first smartphone re-review of 2014. Join us for After The Buzz episode 27!
