Mostly only people that have been living under a rock haven’t noticed that one of the biggest booms in game consoles years ago was local and remote multiplayer support. It paved the way for the networks we see today, and it’s the reason why services like Game Center on iOS exist today to a certain degree. The Google Play store also brought something similar to Game Center recently with its Google Play games, but this time the company is taking a step further in the multiplayer department.
Today’s Google Play Store update confirms that the company has just baked asynchronous multiplayer services into the Android SDK. This will bring significant enhancements to the current limitations that Android users face when wanting to play a game with another friend remotely. Aside from these changes, Google is also giving developers a preview of the new Google Drive API, better autocomplete options when sharing with Google+, and also fixes some battery drain issues that a lot of Android 4.4 KitKat users were complaining about.
It’s hard to tell how long it’ll take current games to be updated to take advantage of these services, but given the fact that 2014 has just begun, it’s clear that it’ll make newer games more interesting.
