Hisense pushes phablet limits with 6.8-inch X1

Is there even a dividing line between phablets and tablets anymore? Is the 7-inch ASUS Fonepad really a giant phone? Or the Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 a tiny tablet? This year the CES brings us one more device to straddle that line, the 6.8-inch X1 from Hisense.

“From whom?” you ask, incredulously? That’s fair; we haven’t really spent any time talking about Hisense as a manufacturer of tablets. Will this X1 manage to finally pique our interest? Well, its hardware sounds respectable enough: Snapdragon 800 SoC, 1080p display, 13-megapixel camera, and a 3900mAh battery. Hisense throws its own UI on the phone, but it’s reportedly pretty inoffensive, and the X1 will ship running Android 4.4 KitKat. The X1 only handles HSPA+, but Hisense also has an LTE-enabled version, the X3, coming.

Ship when? The plan is to make the X1 available by late spring – and that includes the US market (with the X3 and its LTE action, too). Hisense is even talking to a couple carriers, so there’s a chance this guy might actually get some real attention – especially if it manages to come in super cheap. We haven’t heard a specific price just yet, but “mid-range” is the name of the game.
