Last week, we heard from Pebble that it had a special announcement ready to go for the CES, and would be sharing it with us today. What would it have in store; just more news about the upcoming Pebble app store, or could there also be new hardware? We were skeptical that we’d be seeing anything so bold as an all-new Pebble 2, but it turns out some new hardware really is in the cards, and today Pebble announces the new Pebble Steel.
Functionally, Pebble Steel is unchanged from the original watch; we get the same display, same battery life, same feature set – it’s still a Pebble at its core. The one internal change we’re aware of is a doubling of the watch’s RAM storage, purportedly as a future-proofing measure. Instead, the big changes are predominantly on the outside, and Pebble has managed to cram all of its smartwatch goodness into a sleeker, thinner package.
Pebble Steel is – unsurprisingly – made from machined stainless steel, and besides a plain bushed metal finish, will also be available in a PVD black matte option. Orders of the model open today, direct through Pebble, and ship starting January 28. Pebble Steel will cost you just about $250.
Of course, there was also app store news, which Pebble now says should be up and running by the end of January. The company shared news of some new partners who are preparing Pebble apps of their own, announcing that Pandora, ESPN, and Mercedes-Benz will all be joining in on the fun.
